Footloose in the Front Forty by Colin Manuel

First vaguely conceived as a bucolic answer to Stuart McLean’s “Stories From The Vinyl Cafe”, this rustic enterprise took on a life all of its own. They say of farming, “it’s the lifestyle”, and even today many Canadians are in some way fondly connected to the family farm. This book is for them.

The stories are based mostly on true-life incidents creatively massaged to fit the adventures of a retired policeman, Aubrey Hanlon, and his wife Sabine when they decide to try farming. The incidents they get into are always unforeseeable and, usually after the fact, full of humour. The unique art of Ben Crane brings that humour to life in a book that celebrates the farming “lifestyle” in all its earthy glory. Enjoy!
